CONSTRUCTION LOBBYING GROUP WELCOMES NEW CHAIR
Construction Alliance NorthEast (CAN), the organisation established two years ago by an alliance of four of the region’s construction and engineering federations, has welcomed a new chairman.
Stuart Miller, who is a well-known face within the construction and contracting sector, takes over the two-year appointment as chair, from Jeff Alexander of Surgo Construction.
CAN was formed to highlight the need for organisations to adopt intelligent procurement practices, including Early Engagement and more open communications so that regional SMEs get a better chance to compete for contracts in the open market.
Speaking about the challenges of his new role, Stuart said: “I was born and bred in the North East and I am pleased to have the opportunity to support the local economy in this way. The quality of civil engineering and construction projects we are delivering in the region is impressive and with the potential opportunities afforded by the Northern Powerhouse agenda, I am keen to ensure that, whenever possible, North East companies have the best possible opportunities to secure North East projects. This will create greater sustainability in the regional contracting industry which is essential, given its key role within the UK economy overall.”
The four federations which support CAN – Federation of Master Builders (FMB), National Federation of Builders (NFB), Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) and Northern Counties Builders Federation (NCBF) – represent 500 companies, which employ more than 100,000 people and enjoy a combined turnover of £3bn.
